The Self is like a gem to be discovered, explored, honored and cherished within every individual.  It provides a blueprint for self-actualization, for individuation itself.  My work is to help people uncover and trust this Self to guide their lives.

bulletSummary View of People Who Benefit From My Work

These are the ways in which I work:

Individual Psychotherapy

The main work I do is individual transformative depth work.  Together, the client/patient and I create a container which allows opening to the authentic Self.  This is the work of individuation in Jungian terms.  We move from ego-centered living to the richness of our unfolding spirituality.  During this process, we will use many tools, including mythology, imagery, dreams and whatever each person needs to accomplish his/her work.  There is an emphasis in my work on integrating the "shadow," those parts of us which have been dis-owned (split-off from consciousness) and often projected onto others.  This "soul-retrieval" work is necessary to become whole once again.

This work is done in an intensive psychotherapy setting which ranges from one session per week to two or three more sessions per week.  This depends on the presenting issues and what "form" of therapy would be most suited to the individual and his/her needs at any given time.

The work of this nature can be done in-person, or by phone.

Spiritually-based Couple's Work

My work with couples is focused on deep communication and the development and sharing of empathy with one another.  We also work to integrate spiritual values into the work so that both people feel that the relationship reflects their deepest integrity issues.  Often, this involves the work of taking a new look at each person's responsibility-taking, and re-owning of the "shadow" which is being projected onto the "other."  Developing and sharing empathy is the most healing force I have ever seen in couples' work.

Small Group Teaching

From time to time, I create small groups in order to explore specific themes and ideas.  The next ones will probably be around Aging as a Spiritual Awakening, and may form after the seminar with Angeles Arrien to take place in May of 2008.  If these groups form, they will combine Angeles' teaching with my own.  See info here.  If you find you might be interested in these groups, let me know.  These groups have been quite popular over the years and are an extension of my university and growth center teaching days.

I also do consultation groups periodically to help therapists apply the principles of Transpersonal Psychology to help them make a spiritual practice of their own work with people.  I have done a good deal of consultation and supervision (no longer formally) over the years.  If you are interested in such groups, let me know.

Life Purpose Coaching/Mentoring

Over the past 40 years, I have worked with and taught thousands of people.  I now have become certified in coaching techniques so that I can combine all my experience into helping you focus on your Life's Purpose.  Usually this is done as part of the psychotherapy process and having these skills is a useful tool.  However, this can be used as a "stand-alone" tool for those who want a coach who has the skills to integrate spiritual and psychological values into goal setting and self-actualization projects.

eTherapy

eTherapy is a newer form of therapy/teaching/dialogue which is internet-based and uses a combination of confidential emails and phone sessions as tools.  The client can use any tool which suites his/her needs.  Or it can be used as an adjunct to in-person therapy.

eTherapy works well with people who:

bulletHave busy schedules, making travel to therapists’ and coaches’ offices difficult.
bulletHave fears of going to these offices for whatever reason.  More privacy is offered because a person does not have to leave his/her home.
bulletWould like to have 24-hour availability (through writing of emails) and want time to compose their thoughts.
bulletAre home-bound and/or physically challenged.
bulletWould like expert help available to them through the convenience of emails or by phone to answer questions and get helpful advice.
bulletAre in places where my expertise is not readily available.
bulletAre in countries other than the USA and would like access to such expertise.
bulletAre deaf or hearing-impaired and so need email work.
bulletLike the flexibility of thinking and writing whenever they want.
bulletDesire flexibility of therapist choice – can work with someone in another city, state or even country so aren’t limited by geography.  Enables therapists to work with people all over the world.
bulletWill feel less inhibited and can write (or speak if on the phone) their real feelings more easily than in person.
bulletAre students or others who would like time to ponder and think about issues at their own pace.

Disadvantages:

bulletLack of visual and verbal cues (if on emails alone).  However, intuition and energy apprehension works as well by phone or email.
bulletDelayed responses in the case of emails
bulletDoes not work well with emergencies in which someone needs to be "seen."
bulletComputer glitches or equipment failures
bulletConfidentiality issues when computers are used in public places.  (This is lessoned by encryption.)

People with whom I work are usually:

bulletSeeking to integrate their spiritual practice into daily life.
bulletSeeking to create a spiritual practice of their daily life due to their study of various spiritual teachings and/or depth psychology.
bulletLooking for deep transformative psychotherapy with a seasoned practitioner.
bulletLooking for Jungian and Transpersonally-based work.
bulletPeople who know they need very deep work caused by early trauma.
bulletHaving challenging experiences arising from spiritual practices and need help exploring and integrating these experiences.
bulletSeeking to approach aging as a spiritual awakening experience.
bulletWanting consultation for their own practices from someone experienced in helping other therapists apply transpersonal principles to their own work with people.
